Acne Skin Care
Good acne skin care is important for treating acne and feeling good about how your skin looks. The good news is that virtually all acne can be effectively treated. By following the guidelines below, you should see results. If you are not getting the results you want, you should see a dermatologist.
CLEANSING THE SKIN
1. Wash once in the morning and once in the evening or after perspiring heavily (which can make acne worse). Use
products
that are designed to clear acne blemishes and allow the skin to heal.
2. Use your fingertips to scrub to reduce skin irritation. Do not scrub the skin or use wash cloths, which can irritate the skin and lead to more breakouts.
3. Rinse with lukewarm water.
4. Shampoo regularly.
5. Practice sun protection using sunscreen or staying in the shade. Avoid tanning beds.
THINGS TO AVOID
1. Any product that irritates the skin such as rubbing alcohol, astringents, exfoliators, masks, etc.
2. Avoid popping or squeezing pimples, as it takes longer for the skin to heal and can even leave scarring. (See below for information for treating acne scars.)
3. Any products containing oil including hair products.
4. Try to avoid touching the skin during the day as much as possible.
5. Tanning beds.
SURPRISING FACTS
1. Makeup can be worn when treating acne as long is it doesn't contain oils or clog the pores (see product recommendations below).
2. Moisturizer can actually help calm the skin as long as it is oil-free and won't clog the pores (see product recommendations below). If you are using an acne treatment, you may have to experiment with whether to apply moisturizer before or after the acne treatment product (or both if skin is extra dry).
ACNE SCAR SKIN CARE
There are many types of acne scars and many ways of treating them. The most basic is using a home
microdermabrasion treatment,
which can smooth scars and rejuvenate skin texture, in combination with an
even-complexion mask,
which brightens the skin and creates a more even skin tone. However, do not use the microdermabrasion treatment if you are experiencing a current outbreak of acne, as it may be too harsh for your skin.
...If this does not give you enough of the results you are looking for, other options include seeing a dermatologist who should be able to determine what treatment is best for your skin: chemical peel, lasering or resurfacing of scars, dermabrasion, or injections using collagen, subcutaneous fat, or other treatments. ...The good news is that acne scars can be taken care of by a dermatologist and don't have to be endured if you aren't getting the results you want at home.
ACNE SKIN CARE FOR MEN
You can use the same acne skin care products as women (see product recommendations below). However, many men know that shaving is challenging when you have acne. Here are some tips that can help you get a clean shave:
1. Wet face thoroughly before shaving to help soften the hairs.
2. Be sure the blade is sharp (determine whether a razor or electric shaver works best for you).
3. Shave lightly and never try to shave off the acne as this makes the acne worse and could cause scarring.
